The Evolving Influence of Socialism on China's Economic Development

Abstract:
After reviewing some possible meanings of ‘socialism’, I will discuss
its influence on China’s economic development during the three decades
before 1978, the three decades after 1978, and the three decades that
lie ahead.  I will conclude with an overall assessment of the
contribution of socialism to China’s past and likely future progress.

Presenters’ Biography:
Adrian Wood is Professor Emeritus of International Development at the
University of Oxford.  His research over the past three decades has
been concerned mainly with interactions between the global economy and
national human resources.  He was educated at Cambridge and Harvard
Universities.  From 1969 to 1977 he taught at Cambridge, and from 1977
to 1985 was a senior economist at the World Bank in Washington DC,
working for five years on China, in which he retains an active
interest, as well as on Turkey and the 1980 World Development Report.
From 1985 to 2000, he was a Professorial Fellow of the Institute of
Development Studies at the University of Sussex, and from 2000 to 2005
was Chief Economist of the UK’s Department for International
Development.
